We have been restoring for a while an original 1967 model 912 factory rally car from Sweden. In our first picture this very car is on the ice track in the 1967 KAK Rally. The car will be ready in the coming months and we will then tell you more about it.
Working with these historical rally cars is fascinating and there are a lots of details which need research and sometimes even a bit of improvisation. One of the specific parts for the rally cars are the stone guards for the fuel tank / steering system in the front and for the engine / transmission in the rear. The factory option lists e.g. for “Competion Drivers” in 1967 listed these parts: 9561 (901.201.081.00) for front and 9562 (901.385.035.00) for the rear. Even there has been a lot of early rally cars in Finland and Sweden I have never come across the original factory skid plates. If any one of you has these, I would love to have a picture. I have the feeling that many of the Scandinavian rally cars got “homemade” skid plates rather than the factory options. I might be wrong. The Scania Vabis racing team told already in 1968 in an interview that these stone guards or skid plates were originally made out of aluminium, but very soon it became obvious that steel was better material for them in Scandinavia.
We have built our own skid plate for 912 Rally in aluminium and as a copy or rather a modification of the ones which were used in the Waldegård 911T rally car (BB2277) in 1968 and a Finnish Porsche 1965 911 rally car. We have a few pictures on these plates with the team of Scania Vabis rally department in1968. We have also the picture of the team of Herpman Metall Oy who have made the stone guards to our 912. These guys are absolutely great.
